It is recommended by the PDNSA that:
- The PDNS is a Registered practitioner
- He/she is Graded at a minimum of G rising to H with experience
- The employing authority should be responsible for the support and funding at the professional development of a PDNS. The employing authority should also be responsible for providing the time and funding for attendance at a minimum of one national conference per year.
- A minimum of ENB A43 or equivalent should be undertaken by a newly appointed PDNS within the first year as appropriate
- The nurse should have or be working towards a nursing degree
- Nurse consultants should have a Masters level qualification or be working towards one
- The nurse should work wholly in Parkinson's care, either full-time or part-time.
- He/she will work with consultant neurologists/physicians/geriatricians with an interest or involvement in Parkinson's or within a community setting linked to a consultant with specialist interest in the disease.
- He/she be based in the hospital or community, but may visit either, depending on need, regardless of the funding of the post.
- The nurse works with both patients and their families.
- He/she acts as a resource and advisor in nursing issues in PD for other health professionals in the health authority.
- The PDNS will be an educator in PD for colleagues in nursing and other disciplines, in hospital and the community.
- He/she will work towards a comprehensive and integrated PD service for the employing authority. Next
